Haines Junction was established in 1942 during construction of the Alaska Highway. In 1943, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed a branch road—today’s Haines Highway— connecting the Alaska Highway with the port of Haines on Lynn Canal. Haines Junction is on the eastern boundary of Kluane National Park and Reserve.
Haines Junction offers an excellent range of accommodations. Visitor services include motels, a bed and breakfast, restaurants, liquor store, gas stations, garage services, groceries, souvenirs and a bakery. There is a bank (located in the post office), an RCMP office, library, health centre and a convention centre. Camping available at several campgrounds in the area.

Attractions:
- Kluane National Park Visitor Centre has information on the park, natural history exhibits and video presentations.
- Flightsee Kluane National Park by fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter.
- Raft the Tatshenshini, Alsek and Dezadeash rivers.
- Our Lady of the Way Catholic Mission was built in 1954, using parts from an old Army Quonset hut left from highway construction days.
- St. Christopher’s Anglican Church was built by local craftsmen.
- Annual Alsek Music Festival, Kluane Mountain Bluegrass Festival and Kluane to Chilkat International Bike Relay held in June.
