Dease Lake

Population: 450 Dease Lake is located in northwestern British Columbia on the Cassiar Highway, at its junction with Telegraph Creek Road, 146 miles south of the Alaska Highway and 304 miles north of the Yellowhead Highway. |
The lake was named in 1834 Hudson’s Bay Co. Chief Factor Peter Warren Dease. Robert Campbell established an HBC post at Dease Lake in 1838, but it was abandoned a year later. Laketon, on the west side of the lake, was a centre for boat building during the Cassiar gold rush of 1872–80. A gold rush trail from Telegraph Creek on the Stikine River to the gold rush settlement at Dease Lake became Telegraph Creek Road. Today, Dease Lake is a government centre and supply point for the district. Northern Lights College (University of Northern British Columbia) has a campus here. Dease Lake has all visitor services. Lodging at Northway Motor Inn and Arctic Divide Inn and Motel; dining at Mama Z’s. Camping at Water's Edge Campground and Dease Lake Lions Tanzilla River Campground just south of town (for donation). Gas stations, hardware and food stores, shopping at Northern Bear Gifts & Souvenirs, and a café with post office and laundromat. |
